Kev wakes up that afternoon in an odd mood. He gets dressed, and then starts walking. When he reaches the last house on the street, he goes inside and grabs himself a sandwich. But he doesn’t stay to cause any more trouble than that. And then his journey begins.
2.
After Alice and Zedadias had each eaten a slice of the needlessly expensive cake, they returned to Zedadias’ house. I wanted Alice to ask him to let her sleep over, but the conversation option wasn’t there. While I can exert a large amount of control over my characters when I choose to, I often can’t make them say something if they’re not ready to do that, and Alice, for whatever reason, didn’t want to. It was late in the evening before she felt ready. But she need not have worried. Zedadias was happy to give her the spare bed for the night. Once again, Zedadias has shown a small amount of compassion, but it’s still more than anyone has ever done for her in her life.

Alice is still very hungry, so before she and Zedadias go to bed, she decides to cook a meal for them both. Zedadias looks terribly anxious about this. This might be because this is the first time she has ever cooked, and she doesn’t exactly have a good track record with using his appliances so far. Zedadias’ caution turns out to be justified. Alice burns the meal. This doesn’t bother Alice much. I’m sure she’d eat anything at this point. Zedadias sits down and eats it with her, politely making no comment about the quality of the food. Afterwards, they both get up to head for their beds. but it seems neither Alice nor I had realised quite how tired she was, as she collapses on the floor. It’s the first time she’s been given permission to sleep in a bed for a night, but she never even reaches it. Zedadias doesn’t realise what’s happened. He’s already started on his important bedtime routine.

Eventually, Alice reaches Zedadias’ spare bed without collapsing. She gets a full night’s sleep, and wakes feeling well rested for the first time in her life. She concedes to Zedadias that he probably ought to cook breakfast. She insists on cleaning up afterwards, though. Which inevitably leads to a broken sink again. She tries to act like nothing happened and starts reading through the romance novels on Zedadias’ bookshelf, but she’s still worrying about the mess she’s made. Zedadias isn’t bothered about the broken sink. He just wants to play tag. This is Zedadias’ second favourite activity in the world, and if I leave the two of them alone together for any length of time, a game of it is soon proposed. It’s as if Zedadias is helping Alice make up for her lost childhood. Alice still has her part-time job at the supermarket, and she’s feeling pretty good when she walks into town in the afternoon. After work, she comes back to Zedadias’ house, but stops by the mailbox. And another day’s pay is sent off to charity.

Past the billboard of a monkey licking its own eyeball is the town. Kev is returning to civilisation. He finds Alice outside Zedadias’ house. Alice is talking with Zedadias. She looks relaxed, well rested, and she’s smiling. Kev is starving, dirty, and exhausted. He’s not happy.
8.
There’s an ugly confrontation between the father and daughter on the doorstep that evening. Zedadias is upset by Kev’s comments about Alice, and about him, but not once does either party invite him to join the conversation. Alice is invited to stay the night again. Kev seems to believe this invitation is extended to him as well, and he sleeps on the sofa. Despite being given the spare bed, Alice doesn’t sleep properly, and only snatches a few hours on top of the covers. She gains a scowl on her face when she finds Kev hasn’t magically disappeared by the morning. Despite her displeasure, she starts preparing some food for him. She isn’t very hungry herself, but her father is still starving. Zedadias does not seem to share her pity.
9.
Alice is looking after her father, but that doesn’t mean she’s pleasant to him. He gets some distasteful looks as the food is served. He seems grateful nevertheless. They eat together at the table. They say little. When they’re done, however, Kev begins to open up to Alice. He repeatedly tells her about his worries, particularly about their lack of money. I don’t know if he was expecting some kind of comforting or sympathetic response, but he doesn’t get one. And with that, Alice walks out the door. With Kev there, she’s at risk of more verbal abuse, and she won’t live like that any more. Nor can she impose herself on Zedadias forever.
10.
Alice has found what looks like an unlocked abandoned warehouse outside the centre of town. It could be a good place to squat when she can’t or won’t stay at other people’s homes. There’s a sofa left inside that seems in good condition. And even some shelves full of old books. But it turns out later in the day that the place isn’t as abandoned as it seemed. It’s used by the locals as some kind of unofficial public library. Alice will get no privacy here. Zedadias calls Alice on her mobile to talk. It seems Kev hasn’t left Zedadias’ house yet.
11.
Kev never left Zedadias’ home after Alice did. He’s still wandering the house having arguments with himself. Zedadias isn’t responding to him, perhaps hoping that if he ignores him, he’ll go away. Ever since Alice’s early visit when she broke his shower, water has been constantly leaking from somewhere, despite the shower having been fixed long ago. Zedadias spends most of his days futilely trying to stem the tide with his mop. When all the shouting tires him out, Kev curls up on the bed. Zedadias’ life goes on around him.
